Snowboard Carving & Flat Ground Certification System

CGIA certifies specialist technical ability in two disciplines through objective criteria, on-snow assessment and graded certificates. Every certificate is assessed and issued by CGIA and confirms the holder has met our own specialist standard.

C1 is not equivalent to F1. Carving and Flat Ground are independent specialist certifications assessing different technical abilities. Levels held in one pathway do not transfer to the other.

Examiner appointment is a separate qualification subject to formal appointment, assessment consistency requirements, ethical standards and governance. It is not automatically granted by completing C3 or F3.

Certification structure

Disciplines and levels

Carving: C1, C2, C3; C4 is the Carving examiner level. Flatland: F1, F2, F3; F4 is the Flatland examiner level. The two disciplines can be taken separately.

Two badges and the Instructor Certificate

Technical and teaching assessments are conducted separately. Participants who pass an assessment earn the corresponding Technical Badge or Teaching Badge and receive a document confirming that achievement. Only participants who have earned both badges at the same level can be awarded the Instructor Certificate and become a CGIA-certified instructor at that level. Example: C1 Technical Badge + C1 Teaching Badge → C1 Instructor Certificate; F1 Technical Badge + F1 Teaching Badge → F1 Instructor Certificate. A Technical Badge or Teaching Badge alone is not an instructor qualification; both badges and their documents are retained after the Instructor Certificate is awarded.

Level-by-level progression

Technical and teaching are two separate routes, each progressing level by level (C1 → C2 → C3; F1 → F2 → F3). The previous level in the same route must be passed before the next level can be taken. A previous-level Instructor Certificate is not required to progress in either route. At the same level, the technical and teaching assessments have no fixed order.

Entry and training

Candidates may take the Technical Assessment only, without the Teaching Assessment. The Technical Badge does not require an instructor qualification. Pre-assessment training for both technical and teaching is optional; direct entry still requires meeting the entry and level-by-level requirements. Teaching Certification is open to holders of a snowboard instructor qualification from another organisation, and to riders holding a designated level of CGIA Technical Badge. Accepted external qualifications and the required technical level will be announced separately.

Dual-discipline qualifications

Dual-discipline technical qualification: holding Carving and Flatland Technical Badges at the same level. Dual-discipline instructor qualification: holding Instructor Certificates in both disciplines at the same level. These can be claimed once the relevant badges or certificates are held, with no additional examination. Official names and claim arrangements will be announced.

Examiners

C4 and F4 are the examiner levels of the two disciplines. Applicants will normally hold the Level 3 Instructor Certificate in the same discipline, then complete examiner training and pass an examiner assessment. During the founding period, senior experts may be appointed after review of their technical, teaching and assessment experience. Detailed requirements are still being developed; C4 and F4 are not yet open.

CGIA is currently in preparation. The Technical Committee has confirmed participating members, while its structure and responsibilities are still being finalised. Technical and teaching assessment standards have not yet been written; they will be developed jointly by the Technical Committee.

Read the pathway from bottom to top. Technical and teaching assessments progress independently, and the two assessments at the same level may be completed in either order. Both badges in the same discipline and at the same level are required for an Instructor Certificate.

During CGIA’s founding period, experienced experts may also be appointed as examiners following review. Please refer to official announcements for the availability of examiner routes.

Technical & Teaching

Proposed

Technical and Teaching Certification

Our certification system separates riding performance from instructional ability.

The Technical Assessment evaluates whether a candidate can perform the required skills with control, consistency, and technical quality.

The Teaching Assessment evaluates whether a candidate can analyse performance, demonstrate skills clearly, design effective exercises, communicate with students, and manage safety.

A candidate must pass both assessments to receive the relevant Instructor Certificate.
