Carving Certification | C1–C3

Three levels — C1, C2 and C3 — each divided into two stance specialisations:

  • Forward Stance
  • Duck Stance

A specialist carving pathway. C1 is the minimum specialist standard — functional low-stance carving in regular and switch stance, on both edges. Carving levels are independent of the Flatland pathway.

Technical and teaching assessments are conducted separately. Participants who pass an assessment earn the corresponding Technical Badge or Teaching Badge and receive a document confirming that achievement. Only participants who have earned both badges at the same level can be awarded the Instructor Certificate and become a CGIA-certified instructor at that level. Example: C1 Technical Badge + C1 Teaching Badge → C1 Instructor Certificate; F1 Technical Badge + F1 Teaching Badge → F1 Instructor Certificate. A Technical Badge or Teaching Badge alone is not an instructor qualification; both badges and their documents are retained after the Instructor Certificate is awarded.

Technical and teaching each progress C1 → C2 → C3; the previous level in the same route must be passed first. The Technical Badge does not require an instructor qualification, and training is optional. C4 is the planned Carving examiner level and is not yet open.

CGIA is currently in preparation. The Technical Committee has confirmed participating members, while its structure and responsibilities are still being finalised. Technical and teaching assessment standards have not yet been written; they will be developed jointly by the Technical Committee.

Carving Level 1

Minimum specialist performance standard: functional low-stance carving in regular and switch stance, on both edges, repeated across a continuous sequence.

Who it is for
Qualified snowboard instructors, or riders with equivalent professional teaching experience, entering the specialist pathway.
Core competencies
  • Functional low stance through linked turns
  • Regular and switch carving on both edges
  • Short, medium and long-radius carving
  • Pressure compression and release
  • Repeatable specialist-level execution
Assessment overview Proposed Framework
Technical Assessment and Teaching Assessment, both required. Minimum 80% overall and in every core category; critical-fail conditions apply.
Toward the next level
Develop higher edge angle, speed and technical diagnosis before attempting C2.

Carving Level 2

Performance at Carving Level 2 under greater speed, steeper pitch, higher edge angle and increased technical and teaching-analysis load.

Who it is for
C1 specialists teaching carving regularly and developing high-performance riding.
Core competencies
  • Higher edge angle with stable body position
  • Rapid radius and rhythm changes
  • Stronger pressure absorption and release
  • Variable snow and complex line selection
  • Detailed technical diagnosis
Assessment overview Proposed Framework
Technical Assessment and Teaching Assessment, both required, including video or observation-based analysis and a 30–60 minute specialist lesson.
Toward the next level
Build near-equivalent switch performance and long-duration repeatability before attempting C3.

Carving Level 3

Performance at Carving Level 3: exceptional precision, adaptability, technical range and repeatability, with high-level teaching analysis.

Who it is for
C2 specialists coaching other instructors and specialists.
Core competencies
  • Low-stance carving at high speed with very high precision
  • Steep terrain and demanding line control
  • Near-equivalent regular and switch quality
  • Advanced pressure and energy regulation
  • Analysis of subtle timing and line faults
Assessment overview Proposed Framework
Technical Assessment and Teaching Assessment, both required, including live diagnosis of another specialist and long-term development planning.
Toward the next level
Examiner status is a separate qualification and appointment process; it is not granted by C3.

Proposed Framework

How carving is assessed.

CGIA specialist certifications are assessed through a formal professional examination process. Detailed assessment standards and examiner criteria are controlled CGIA materials.

The assessment content below is a proposed framework published for transparency. Criteria, weighting and pass thresholds are pending ratification by the CGIA technical committee and are not yet effective examination rules.
